The Morehead City Fire Department Station No. 1 is the newest station in over 10 Years for the town. This station sits about 1/2 mile from the intercoastal waterway, so hurricane and flooding were major issues with the station design. Inside the station a hardened EOC was designed so in the event of a storm situation the fireman and other personnel could run the town's operations. The station has 3 drive-through bays, sleep rooms, large day room that connects to the kitchen, and laundry facility. A large meeting room for fire training or community meetings was included as well. To accommodate for hurricane conditions the structure was designed to withstand winds of 125 m.p.h. and special hurricane shutters were designed to protect windows and doors. A hardened room was also designed for extra emergency shelter.
