The design of Station No. 2 is a product of the forward thinking of the Town of Carrboro and surrounding communities. Realizing that energy efficient, sustainable design is quickly becoming an industry standard, the Town decided to make sustainability a goal for the new fire station. The environmental benefits and the future energy cost savings simply outweighed the upfront costs of the "green" technology. Once complete, the new station will meet current requirements to achieve LEED Silver certification should they choose to apply it. A few of the sustainable aspects of the new station include efficient HVAC systems, water efficient landscaping, green interior finishes, and possibly capture and reuse of rainwater on-site. The layout of the station was designed in such a way as to minimize harsh southern sun exposure as well create a functional fluid layout that allows for an efficient heating and cooling system. There will be two drive through bays with adjacent Decontamination, Shop, and Storage areas. The crew will have a Watch Room, Triage, Dayroom, Kitchen, Dining/Training Room and Exercise Room at their disposal. The residential area provides toilet/shower facilities and sleeping quarters for five crewmen. Outside the crew will have a covered patio. The exterior of the station is designed in both shape and material to be energy efficient while at the same time projecting a clean, uncomplicated aesthetic of a commercial fire station.
